10 polishes (in this post)
The December 2020 PPU shop is bringing us polishes inspired by this year we’ve all had.
Bee’s Knees: Hide Your Hive
BKL was inspired by murder hornets! Hide Your Hive features a medium grey base with copper/green shifting shimmer. Grey can pull very differently on even slightly different skin tones, so I definitely recommend checking this one out on a swatcher whose skin tone is close to yours. On me, this grey base pulls a rather strange beige-green.ย
The formula is very opaque. One coat covers well, two coats to full opacity–just make sure to keep your brushstrokes straight for the cleanest finish.
$12.50, cap of 150
2 coats + top coat
Cupcake: Margaritas To Go
Cupcake’s Margaritas To Go features an apple green base with red/green shifting shimmer. It’s a bit sheer, as I could still catch a hint of my VNL after three coats. It’s a super bright and fun shade, and it really reminds me of apple-flavored sour candies!
$13, no cap
3 coats + top coat
Dreamland: All Wine All the Time
Dreamland’s All Wine All the Time features a warm purple jelly base with red and pink iridescent flakes and scattered holo. The overall effect straddles the line between red and purple, and I really can’t tell which color it leans more. It was pretty sheer on the first coat but built up perfectly in two coats.
$12, cap of 180 US and 20 UK
2 coats + top coat
Femme Fatale: Everybody Knows Sh*t’s F*cked
Femme Fatale was inspired by this short Youtube clip (Everybody Knows Sh*tโs F*cked by Stephen Paul Taylor), which I absolutely recommend watching (with earbuds!!) for a good giggle. This polish features a deep blue jelly base packed with strong red/green shifting shimmer and superfine holo glitters in red and magenta. This combination is absolutely incredible. It takes the classic combination of a sheer blue base with red/green shimmer, and fuses it with a glitterbomb. The end result is so dynamic and compelling.
Two coats covered well, but I added an extra coat for extra sparkle. You may not need a third coat.
$14, cap of 500 bottles
3 coats + top coat
Glisten & Glow: Concerts from the Couch
Glisten & Glow was inspired by all the artists who brought us live music shows via social media platforms and other broadcasts. Concerts from the Couch features a dark grey base with purple/pink/green shifting shimmer. This one is so, so stunning. That contrasting shimmer pops so beautifully against the deep base color. The far green shift is beautiful. And perfect opacity in two easy coats.
$12.50, no cap
2 coats + top coat
Lilypad: Head in the Clouds
Lilypad’s Head in the Clouds features a milky, lavender-tinted sheer base with indigo iridescent flakes and red/gold/green shifting shimmer. It’s a very delicate shade. At three coats I still had clear VNL, so if you dislike that effect I would recommend this as a topper instead.
$14, cap of 250 bottles
3 coats + top coat
Lilypad: I’m So Over It
Lilypad is also bringing an effect topper. I’m So Over It features a rainbow of iridescent and UCC flakes in a clear base. I’m showing it in one coat over black and white, as well as in three coats by itself.
$14, cap of 300 bottles
3 coats + top coat
MTK: Don’t Let Hope Become a Memory
MTK was inspired by the song “The Light” by Disturbed. Don’t Let Hope Become a Memory is a thermal that transitions between a sheer beige when warm to a slate grey when cold, and it is accented with red and pink iridescent flakes that shift green and scattered holo. There’s also a solar effect. In UV light the polish takes on a warm violet hue. It does also glow in the dark, although I don’t have photos of that effect.ย
$12.50, no cap
3 coats + top coat
With the solar effect, activated by exposure to UV light:
Pahlish: What Would Carole Baskin Do?
Pahlish was inspired by the song “What Would Carole Baskin Do?” by Phem x Alison Wonderland. This polish is a multichrome that shifts magenta/red/green. It kind of feels like a red/gold/green multichrome decided to dress up as a pink/gold/green multichrome. The resting state is a bright magenta, but the rest of it is very much red and green.
$13, no cap
2-3 coats + top coat
Scofflaw: Doomscrolling
Scofflaw’s Doomscrolling features a sky blue crelly base with glitters of black, purple, and neon green, and finished with little blue sparkles. I really feel the inspiration of this one to my core ๐ The formula is really great. Since the glitters are on the smaller side, they don’t interfere with application. It applies very smoothly, with the ease of a creme. Two thicker coats should suffice, but I went with three thinner ones, and even then the third might not have been necessary.
$12.50, no cap
3 coats + top coat
